Ferruginous Hawk- Buteo regalis- Description: L= 22 - 26 inches (58 cm) with and a wingspan of 4 - 5 feet. This is the largest of the buteos and is often mistaken for an eagle due to its size. The male and female have identical markings. The main difference is size, with the female being larger. The ferruginous hawk primarily hunts small to medium-sized mammals but will also capture birds, reptiles, and some insects. Interesting Fact: the Ferruginous Hawk’s nesting attempts and fledgling success are dependent upon the food supply in the nesting terrain. If food is inadequate, the pair may not nest at all.
